Jack, a Life Skills teacher working in a block schedule, could use...

some good tips to break things up. I do mostly direct teaching. I would like to establish some routines to do each class, but have been at a loss for ideas for my math and healthyliving/ ADL classes.

Jack,

Having taught freshmen in a block format (86 minute classes) for six years, I understand the situation you find yourself in.

Obviously, every class is unique, and in your specific situation, I can only offer some general tips. For what it’s worth:

Teachers must use the time allotted to them in a way that meets the needs of their students. Your students need lots of attention, as your preference for direct instruction seems to imply.

When planning, break the block into three or four mini lessons. One or two mini lessons can involve direct instruction, but the other two lessons need to get students more involved.

Have more advanced students help those who need it.

If possible, assign a few long term assignments that students can work on for 20 mins. a few days during the week.

I do a question of the day each day.

This advice might be too general to be useful in your unique situation. Provide some more info. and we’ll see if we can get some others involved in the discussion.
